Yellow Snow

The picture below was taken three days after the last snow fall. With the minus day time temps
holding the just fallen look
But if you look a little closer, you will see
a woodpecker in the hawthorn tree (mornings only).
Areas of yellow snow
Yellow hammers are now the most dominant bird in the garden, between fifteen and twenty average. Mixed in with this flock eight to ten Reed buntings.
Sparrow numbers are worryingly low with collared doves absent, but high notes are both Green and Gold finches. A scarce species for this garden, the jackdaw arrived today.
Along with

The brambling( one of two). Ok not as good as crammy's Lesser Redpolls, but it's a long over due first for this garden.

Eating me out of a house.
Worth it though.

What I'd give to have yellowhammers in the garden. As you say ST, worth the expense to help them along. Have a good Christmas

Nice stuff there Steve, keep looking through them you never know what might turn up. A Pine Bunting was in with Yellowhammers at Big Waters one year and the same at Cresswell a few years later...

Hi there ST, I agree with everyone… a yellowhammer as a garden visitor would be brilliant. Can’t be greedy though as have had Bramblings here for the last few weeks which is a first :-)

Just wanted to pop by tonight to wish you a Merry Christmas and all my best wishes for 2011 :-)
